在3月下旬舉行的国该留迪拜杯中 ，U23國足進4球丟6球 ，足助這也是教支球隊自從組建兩年多時間第一次參加正式比賽 ，這也讓球隊獲得了鍛煉 ，球队球同時也看到了和高水平球隊的希望差距。萬厚良表示 ，年轻U23國足在比賽中體現出了不放棄精神，国该留這讓他看到了希望 ：“現在這支球隊很有戰鬥力 ，足助當然我們也看到了和對手的教支差距 ，對暴露出來的問題進行了總結，了解到了不同對手的踢球方式，對我們幫助很大 。”
萬厚良還認為 ，年輕球員應該走出去 ，去留洋 ：“隻要走出去，就能看到差距 ，我們有許多地方需要學習和進步 。而且出去之後學習英語和當地語言 ，對未來的人生也都有幫助 。”
U23國足4月3日回國 ，在海口進行為期21天的入境隔離 ，同時封閉集訓備戰東亞杯和杭州亞運會 。萬厚良表示球隊的準備很充分 ，在隔離期間也沒有浪費任何時間 。
