Brett Ratner's company RatPac Entertainment and fellow producer/financier CJ Entertainment have hired Heather Hach (What to Expect When You're Expecting) to write an English-language remake of the hit 2011 South Korean dramedy Sunny, Mashablehas exclusively learned.
Written and directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol, the original Sunnyfollows a middle-aged woman who tries to fulfill her friend's dying wish of reuniting their group of high school friends. The film alternates between two timelines -- present day when the women are middle-aged, and the 1980s when they were in high school.
Sunnywon several awards in South Korea, where it performed well enough to merit a limited release in the U.S.
Hach co-wrote 2003's Freaky Fridayremake starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis as well as 2012's star-studded romantic comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting. Hach also wrote the book for Legally Blonde: The Musical.
Coming off its association with The Revenant, RatPac has been flying high thanks to the success of Clint Eastwood's Sully, and it will have two more films in theaters before the end of the year -- Assassin's Creedand Warren Beatty's Rules Don't Apply, the latter of which will premiere at AFI Fest.
CJ Entertainment released the original Sunny, and more recently, the company teamed with Amazon Studios for the U.S. release of Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden.
