然而即便是這樣的安排 ，都阻攔不了英國球迷好鬥的天性 。雖然是都代表英格蘭出戰 ，但切爾西和曼城球迷全然沒把雙方當成同一陣營。在衝突的一開始 ，雙方隻是在互相對喊和叫罵 。但在之後，就出現了肢體衝突和投擲飲料瓶的行為 ，事情也就開始逐漸失控 。好在馬德裏警方及時介入 ，最終恢複了秩序 。
在社交媒體上的一段視頻顯示 ，馬德裏警方很快就抵達了現場，他們戴著頭盔和防暴裝備 ，用警棍成功驅逐了現場的曼城球迷 。
雖然兩隊球迷在場外沒有分出勝負 ，但由於比賽的結果 ，曼城球迷顯然能更開心地回家。曼城在客場與馬競0-0戰平 ，總比分1-0晉級半決賽 。而切爾西則在3-0領先完成逆轉的情況下，加時賽被本澤馬打入製勝球 ，總比分4-5出局 。
