Dave Grohl is one of the coolest, most accomplished musicians in rock history — and he can now add "Master Rickroller" to his long line of awe-inspiring titles, right below "Literal Rock Royalty."
The Grohl-fronted Foo Fighters interrupted their set at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan to bring out a surprise guest: none other than Rick Astley, the crooner best known for his late '80s jam, "Never Gonna Give You Up." If you've used the internet over the past decade, you know that song, and exactly what it means.
That's right. The Foo Fighters Rickrolled an entire music festival, live.
SEE ALSO:1,000 musicians played Foo Fighters' 'Learn To Fly,' and it was epicThankfully, someone was recording the whole performance and quickly uploaded it to YouTube, because this is exactly what the internet is all about.
Astley was clearly into the performance, screaming at the crowd and bopping around the stage and addressing the audience (and by extension, all of us) "motherf*ckers." Glorious.
The Foo Fighters tweeted out the video, along with a photo of Grohl and Astley basking in their collective awesomeness.

If you think that drum intro sounds familiar, you're not the only one. YouTube commenters were quick to point out the cover's similarity to a popular mash-up of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Astley's biggest hit, which could've been the impetus behind the festival performance. Grohl was Nirvana's drummer, so the cover is especially fitting.
The Foo Fighters also used the meme to optimal effect back in 2014, when they Rickrolled the Westboro Baptist Church before a gig in Kansas City.
The Foo Fighters recently announced their ninth album, Concrete and Gold, and its accompanying world tour — but there's no word on whether or not audiences can expect their own Rickrolling experience. We can only trust in Dave Grohl and hope.
