The Sunwas criticised for failing to mention the story on its front page; The Timesdid not carry the story on the first edition, but was later changed to a picture of the victims' families outside the Warrington court room.

In the aftermath of the 1989 disaster, The Suncarried a front page claiming to reveal "The Truth" about the disaster that left 96 Liverpool football fans dead.

The article included claims from an anonymous policeman that fans pick pocketed dying victims, urinated on cops and that some of them beat up a policeman giving the "kiss of life", The Guardianreports.

On Tuesday, Liverpool supporters were cleared of any wrongdoing by the Warrington jury.

Following the verdict, The Sun, which since then has been the subject of a boycott by many readers in Liverpool, covered the story in the main leader saying: “The supporters were not to blame. But the police smeared them with a pack of lies which in 1989 The Sunand others in the media swallowed whole.
