This post contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Insecure, titled "Broken as Fuck."
On the season finale of Insecure, we tuned in hoping that the writers would do us a solid and pop off with an opening scene of Issa and Lawrence’s make-up sex. Sadly, the writers are hateful and have no mercy, so instead of dope make-up sex, we are greeted with slow tempo sadness to compliment Issa’s relentless phone calls to Lawrence.
Lawrence is straight up sending Issa to voicemail and not having any of it. He went from gentle, open-hearted, and hardworking bae to “you are dead to me” bro who is unmoved by Issa’s perfect lips and eyebrows that mysteriously always be on fleek. It looks like Lawrence is in the same situation as Monica and your cousin’s edges: so gone!
Another questionable life choice: Issa arrives at Lawrence’s work unexpectedly in an effort to make contact. “Just give me a chance to fix this,” she implores him. Lawrence remains unmoved: “Stop fucking calling me,” he snaps at her before storming away.
Clearly we aren’t getting a resolution, for now. But wait: Is there still hope for resolution in Issa and Molly’s relationship? The immediate answer is no. Mostly because Kelly offers some turnup distraction in the form of her 30th birthday getaway, and Molly is hell bent on having her petty on full blast. Molly is not even trying to cut Issa any slack. She’s determined to be that friend that no one wants to deal with at the sleepover because she steady trying to make it soobvious she got beef with someone.
Self-sabotage is so real
Molly decides to take the tenderoni from the club home for a casual hookup, despite the fact that she’s obviously hungry for more meaningful intimacy. But of course, she isn't about to pop off without a bit of side eye from Issa. Issa is always trying to judge someone based on how they live their life. The reality is that you can’t be that friend unless you are invitedto be that friend. Issa is not, especially right now, and continues to build up the contentious energy between her and her best friend.
A painful read
After some club shenanigans, the four friends are chillin’ in the hot tub at the rental when they decide it's time for a good read. No one pulls punches when they remind Molly that the only difference between “Old Molly” and “New Molly” is that she is honest about the ways in which she sabotages her life on purpose. The discomfort of the moment is broken when Issa jumps out of the hot tub to take an unexpected call from Lawrence.
Their conversation is a well-articulated portrayal of that awkward place you find yourself in when you really want to hear your person’s voice, but the pain of betrayal still lingers, so you just end up speaking in broken sentences. Lawrence is calling Issa from a night out at the strip club, right after he is offered the opportunity to pay for sex. Issa offers some respite from the couch Lawrence has been sleeping on and invites him back to their empty apartment at The Dunes. “I’ll be gone all weekend,” she promises. (Or not.)
A redemptive car ride
Molly helps Issa by driving her back to The Dunes in hopes she can catch Lawrence at home. She intends to pour her heart out and win Lawrence back with a solid apology. The discomfort between the two of them during the care ride is palpable, until Molly breaks the tension and invites Issa to practice what she wants to say to Lawrence.
Issa’s monologue is part practice apology to Lawrence and part actual apology to Molly. In response, Molly brings her walls down and leans into her pain, admitting to Issa, “I don’t want to be who y’all think I am.” This is how we change; through one act of vulnerability at a time.
An empty apartment
Molly drops Issa off and we all hold our breath in hope of a season finale that reunites the torn lovers. After all, Issa knows she made a mistake, she admitted it, and was willing to repair what she broke, even if the admission came because she got caught.
Nawl! Instead, Issa rushes into a room that has been cleared of all of Lawrence’s belongings; a clear reiteration that Lawrence is done for real.
The final scene may not bring redemption for Issa and Lawrence, but we do close on a heartfelt moment between Issa and Molly: two women who have mended their friendship but not their tendency to self-sabotage their own happiness.
Sometimes things stay broken AF.
