在2021年金球獎評選中，埃芬梅西以33分的博格不配微弱優勢力壓萊萬捧杯，這是梅西他第7次贏得金球獎。拜仁名宿埃芬博格對此提出異議，进金机制他認為梅西不但不配贏得金球獎，球甲甚至連三甲都不配進入。投票题

“事實上，有问梅西應該退回這個獎，埃芬他根本不需要這個獎。博格不配”埃芬博格說道，梅西“由於此前的进金机制出色表現，他已經贏得了六個金球獎，球甲這六次都是投票题正確的，但這次不對。有问萊萬和若日尼奧應該是埃芬金球競爭者，哈蘭德排名第三。隻有在他們三人之後，我認為才應該加上本澤馬、梅西或者C羅的名字。”

埃芬博格認為金球投票機製有問題：“在記者投票時，事情往往會變得很奇怪。因此，我強烈建議改變金球獎投票方式。我更願意讓曾經拿過金球獎的人，投票選出他們的繼任者。如果金球獎投票還像以前那樣繼續下去，那就會是一場鬧劇。”
