這23年來 ，苦主國足與日本隊的差距逐漸被拉大 ，在2000年的亞洲杯半決賽裏 ，國足以2-3惜敗於日本 ，2004年亞洲杯決賽，中國隊在家門口遭遇爭議判罰 ，1-3遺憾不敵日本 。隨後接下來幾年的東亞杯比賽中 ，中國隊遭遇日本隊也是非平即負，不過這些比賽雖然是正式比賽 ，但比賽的含金量並不高 ，日本多次派出替補陣容出戰 。
而今天進行的12強賽 ，是一場國足與日本隊真刀真槍的較量 ，國足上半場完全被對手所壓製 ，到了下半場中國隊派出4名歸化球員出場 ，但依舊無法攻破日本隊的球門 ，最終遭遇兩連敗。
