Summer movie fans, it is my somber duty to inform you: we have been robbed.
In a recent interview with BUILD, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdomstar Daniella Pineda detailed a scene with Chris Pratt that would've established her character's sexuality.
Unfortunately, Pineda says the exchange was cut for time.
SEE ALSO:'Jurassic World' meets 'American Ninja Warrior' in epic crossover obstacle courseIn the scene, Pineda's character, Dr. Zia Rodriguez, takes a moment to size up her dino-fighting buddy, Owen Grady (Pratt). After giving him a good once-over, Rodriguez says, "Yeah, square jaw, good bone structure, tall, muscles. I don’t date men, but if I did, it would be you. It would gross me out, but I’d do it."

You're telling me this killer quip, lesbian reveal combo didn't make the movie... because of time?! Let me in that editing room—I will find a few dozen "Wow! Dinosaurs!" reaction shots we can do without.
Pineda expressed her enthusiasm for the moment, sharing that she appreciated the insight it gave into her character. Her spot-on delivery in the interview makes it clear the scene would have killed in theaters too.
It's disappointing to see yet another character's queer identity fall into the realm of loosely implied. While Universal has earned some props for diversifying its mostly white cast with minority performers Pineda and Justice Smith this time around, it's difficult not to raise an eyebrow at such an excellent piece of writing getting scrapped based on time.
Perhaps Jurassicproducers followed Disney's example of chickening out on fully celebrating an "exclusively gay" moment. (See Beauty and the Beast's LeFou debacle for details.)
When asked if she wanted to see her character's lesbian backstory later in the franchise, Pineda said, "I do. Because I'd like to see more of that, especially in big ass movies." Amen, girl.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdomhits theaters this Friday, June 21. Yes, right in the middle of LGBTQ Pride month. Thanks for noticing.
