The formation of each snowflake crystal is manipulated by atmospheric conditions. Small changes in temperature or humidity can affect the overall shape of a snowflake.

A photographer by the name of Wilson Alwyn Bentley was also fascinated with taking photos of the crystal patterned snowflakes. He captured his first snowflake photo in 1885 and over the course of his life he photographed more than 5,000 unique snowflakes.
